Cross-Environment Value Mapping A Governance Model for Multi-Tier SAP Landscape Migrations

Abstract

Multi-tier SAP landscapes, spanning development, quality assurance, staging, and production environments, and frequently multiple parallel SAP and non-SAP systems, face a recurring governance problem during migration programs: configuration, master data, and authorization values drift out of alignment across tiers as changes are built, tested, and promoted at different speeds by different teams. Traditional transport and change management controls track objects and code, but they do not consistently track the business-meaningful values those objects represent, or confirm that a value confirmed correct in one tier still holds true once promoted to the next

This article introduces Cross-Environment Value Mapping (CEVM), a governance model that treats configuration, master data, and authorization values as first-class governed artifacts, tracked explicitly across every landscape tier and system, rather than as an implicit byproduct of transport and code promotion. The model defines a landscape tier taxonomy, a value category framework, a mapping matrix structure, promotion gate criteria, reconciliation checks, and a governance cadence with defined roles and escalation paths.

The article is organized around a deliberately table-dense and bullet-driven structure, since the CEVM model itself is best communicated as a set of structured mappings, matrices, and checklists rather than narrative description alone. It closes with implementation methodology, illustrative multi-wave case pattern data, common pitfalls, and best practice recommendations.
